CDC Creates New Strategic Plan

The Cuero Development Corporation (CDC) is pleased to be working on a new strategic plan. The last plan was constructed in 2004 and out of the strategic planning process came ideas and tasks that CDC has spent the past several years completing.

For example, baby boomers were identified as a group that should be targeted for rural living. Baby boomers purchase homes, pay taxes, and create jobs for the community. CDC helped Cuero become a Certified Retirement Community through the Texas Department of Agriculture.

Another goal was to continue funding the Small Business Loan Program. CDC has reached almost $400,000 in money loaned to small businesses.

Spec buildings were needed for businesses to grow. CDC successfully purchased and sold the Coca-Cola building to Stimson Furniture. Most recently CDC purchased the former TxDOT property to develop for economic growth.

To create a professional and comprehensive plan Johnson & Associates of Austin, Texas was hired. A consultant came down and interviewed industry representatives, observed, and asked questions. On Friday, December 7th the results were announced. Twenty-five recommendations were made that should help increase sales tax revenue and create a more cohesive community plan for CDC.

The recommendations are currently under review by CDC and if accepted will create the basis for the next strategic plan.

McAllen International Travel Show

CDC Executive Director Shelley South Pennell and Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kay Lapp, as part of the I10 Corridor Association, took part in the McAllen International Travel Show on January 4 and 5. The show attracts over 10,000 people looking for travel opportunities in Texas and beyond.

Shelley and Kay spent Friday, January 4 at the show talking to folks about the benefits of visiting this area and all that’s offered here!

The show was a great opportunity to speak face-to-face with potential tourists and visitors. Several brochures, courtesy of the Chamber of Commerce, featuring Cuero were handed out.

Christmas in the Park was a success for the eighth straight year! Folks from all over the country (and world) experienced the brilliant lighted display at the Cuero Municipal Park. If you are interested in purchasing a scene or donating towards this event, please contact the CDC office.
