CUERO'S RESTROOM WINS CONSTRUCTION AWARD
The new downtown public restroom on Main Street won in the
category of Best New Construction in the Texas Downtown
Association President's Awards.
Cuero was one of four finalists competing against projects
from Elgin, Farmersville and McKinney. A detailed application
with photos was submitted by Shelley South of the Cuero
Development Corporation in July.
The restroom was a partnership between CDC, the City of Cuero,
and local merchants that took several years of planning with
the construction process beginning in early 2007, and a July
grand opening. While the exterior of the building blends
perfectly with the turn-of-the-century structures on Cuero's
Main Street, the interior of the facility is completely modern
with automatic lights, faucets, hand-dryers and toilets.
The award was accepted by Cuero City Manager Corlis Riedesel at
the Annual Texas Downtown Association Conference in Fort Worth,
Texas on October 18. Also attending the ceremony were CDC Board
President Charles Papacek and Mrs. Papacek.

University of Texas-Austin Students in Cuero
The Chamber of Commerce, Cuero Development Corporation and
Visionaries in Preservation have been working on a historic
walking tour brochure for downtown Cuero. With the rich history
found in Cuero's downtown the tour is a perfect addition to
the many activities that can be enjoyed there. Cities like
Goliad and La Grange have similar projects with brochures that
feature buildings and their unique history.
The group discussed how to get architectural renderings of the
buildings and discovered that Wayne Bell with the Texas
Historical Commission was teaching a class at the University of
Texas this fall on architecture and historic preservation.
Although other communities were considered Cuero was chosen
for a class project. Eight students and two faculty members
spent two days studying, taking photos, and researching
downtown Cuero in October. The end result will be
recommendations on how to restore a building to its original
design. Also, the students will help create architectural line
drawings for the project brochure as well as assist with
creating text for the brochure.
Mr. Bell will be speaking at the December Community Leaders'
Meeting to share with the public the results and findings of
the class.
