NATURE TOURISM AND PADDLING TRAILS

In March, Shelly Plante from Texas Parks and Wildlife spoke at a Community Leaders' Meeting discussing nature tourism and paddling trails. Rural communities are capitalizing on nature tourism by sharing with others their natural amenities while promoting preservation and education.

Recently, Kay Lapp, Chamber Director and Shelley South, CDC Director, visited the Luling and Goliad Paddling Trails. It was a great opportunity to ask about common concerns such as landowner liability, take in and take out points, maintenance, litter, and illegal activities on and by the river. During the visit, planning and execution of the project was discussed as well as the results to date.

Luling and Goliad were successful in creating a community effort. Each community has a non-profit organization that is driving the project. The paddling trails were partnerships between the public, city, county, river authority and more.

The goal of these paddling trails is not only to share the river with the community and others but to teach everyone how important natural resources are and what we have to do to preserve them.

Cuero has an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of its neighbors: Luling, Gonzales, Goliad, and Victoria. A community meeting is planned for the future. If you would like to be involved please contact the Cuero Development Corporation at 361-275-8178.
