CHISHOLM TRAIL HERITAGE MUSEUM

For over seven years, the directors of the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum have been dedicated to the development and establishment of an exemplary museum project for Cuero and South Central Texas. Located in Cuero's National Register, "Historic Downtown Commercial District," the museum's mission is "to preserve the ranching and western heritage of South Central Texas through interpretative exhibits, research, and educational programs".

Support has been derived from many local, state and federal agencies, including the Texas Historical Commission, but most recently they received a $100,000 donation from H-E-B to assist the project with their vision of creating a ranching history museum on the ground floor of the historic Knights of Pythias Hall, while providing community multi-use facilities on the second floor.

Work has commenced on Phase Four of the seven-phase Restoration Master Plan, created by David Hoffman, one of Texas' most renowned preservation architects. The Cuero Development Corporation granted funds to help restore the rear (West) façade of the museum. This will include cleaning and re-pointing the brick, removing cinder block infill and replacing original doors and windows in the openings. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, Visionaries in Preservation – Cuero, and the Texas Historical Foundation have also contributed to the implementation of this restoration phase.

"Our board envisions the completed project to bolster Cuero's appeal as a destination for heritage tourists, while enriching the educational and cultural opportunities for local citizens and visitors alike," remarked board chairman Robert Oliver.
