NATURE TOURISM: IS IT FOR YOU?
If anyone had asked if I was a nature tourist I would have said no.
To me nature tourism was flying/driving hundreds of miles to do
something that could potentially cost me a trip to the emergency
room. Think white water rafting or mountain climbing.
However, I was very misguided. Nature Tourism is defined by
The International Ecotourism Society as being responsible
travel to natural areas that conserve the environment and
benefits the local people. This includes things such as
bird and wildlife watching, hunting, fishing, hiking, biking,
canoeing, and kayaking.
Cuero is fortunate to have an abundance of wildlife and nature
at our fingertips. Located on the Central Texas Coast Wildlife
Trail residents and visitors are able to enjoy diverse bird
watching. Also, the Guadalupe River provides entertainment in
the form of canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Opportunities are
available to hunt quail, dove, turkey, deer, and hogs. If
watching wildlife is more your style you may also run across
the following in our area: bobcats, coyotes, badgers, raccoons,
rabbits, possum, armadillos, a variety of snakes, and other critters!
Recently, I attended a Wildlife and Nature Tourism Seminar by
Texas Cooperative Extension which is part of The Texas A&M
University System. The seminar was informative and helpful.
Please contact me for more information if you are interested in
one of the following: attracting nature tourists to your property,
diversifying the types of nature tourists that visit your
property, creating a nature tourism business, or participating in
nature tourism activities that are available in Cuero.
